Chapters 8 and 9 Discussion of Anthem
Within your assigned group, discuss your chapter 8-9 summaries of Anthem. After sharing your ideas and discussing these chapters, each of you needs to blog about an important idea generated by your group discussion. Now it's time to share with the entire class, so read the following questions and leave at least one comment on our class blog site. Questions: Decide who created the best title for each chapter and why. Who raised an important question you would like to share with the class? How did your group answer the question? Who found an important literary device that added to your understanding of the story? Explain. Who shared a passage showing an important character change? Describe. Did your group reach a consensus on the most important passage from each novel? Share! Describe a drawing someone from your group created that highlighted an important idea from the chapter.

Ben named chapter 8 "With darkness come light" because Equality goes into the forest and expects to die but he realizes that there is a healthy supply of everything needed to live. He can soon learn how to use all of it. He finds light in the inhospitable environment.
ReplyDeleteCameo had the best title for chapter 8. It was "Reflection" and I thought it was a great title because not only does Equality see a refection of himself, but he reflects on the way his brothers are. That was the best title in our group.
ReplyDeleteDavid named Chapter 8 "Uncharted Forest," because it shows how Equality escapes from the forest and realizes that he wont be in danger. He learns how to use the supplies and he becomes safe.
ReplyDeleteEarl named chapter 8 "The Uncharted Forrest" because he goes into the Forrest to make a new start of his life and so he could live without being told that he can't think for himself and he can't do anything for him self, he has to think as "we".
ReplyDeleteCameo came up with the best titles for both chapters in Anthem for our group. Chapter eight was named “Reflection” and chapter nine was “Followed.” Chapter eight was named that because of the first time Equality saw his reflection. It was somewhat of a turning point in his life and greatly important. The other chapter, as Cameo described, is named that in order to create a feeling of suspense. It makes it seem like something bad will happen to him; that something evil is following him, instead of just the Golden One.
ReplyDeleteThe person who had a really great picture in our group was Lauren. She drew a picture of Equality seeing his reflection in the river and a picture of Liberty telling Equality that she loved him. I liked her pictures the best because she used many colors and she had a large amount of details. I could see what happened in the book through her pictures.
ReplyDeleteThe person who had the best titles for their chapters was Richard. His title for chapter 8 was"Freedom", and his title for chapter 9 was"Reunification". I think that these are the best titles anyone in our group came up with because they explain the whole chapter in one word, and they have a lot of depth to them.
ReplyDeleteDavid also named Chapter 9 "The Golden One," because the Golden One comes to find Equality and they worship The Golden One. They no longer fear the forest because they learned how to utilize it. Then the Golden One said "We love you," towards the end of the chapter.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was really amazing how feelings can change a persons view on life and how rapidly his life can change, going from a bed and food and friends to living in the forest eating birds
ReplyDeleteFor Chapter 8, Drew came up with the title freedom. He explained all of Equality's feelings and freedoms now that he has escaped. Abby used a really good quotation from the book as a simile. It gave me chills when I read it so it made me think back to the book. I just have to say that I worked forever on my project. I loved my pictures and my titles. I just felt like I did a really good job. I'm so being self centered right now!
ReplyDeleteLauren had the best titles in my group. For chapter 8 her title was The Outside World and for chapter 9 her title was Our Hope Returns. The titles were the best because they described what the chapter was going to talk about and gave you a clue of what would happen. In chapter 8 equality experiences freedom so i thought that Lauren's title explained that the most. In chapter 9 equality has hope of life and has found that there is more to life then following the society, so the title Our hope returns fits it well.
ReplyDeleteI think that in our group's discussion of Anthem by Ayn Rand, Earl had the best title for chapter eight. He chose the title "The Uncharted Forest". I thought this was very descriptive, because in this chapter Ayn Rand talks about how Equality escapes into the Uncharted Forest. He escapes from his usual society and into freedom and hope.
ReplyDeleteSpencer titled chapter 8 "The dark forest"because equality finds himself in the forest and decides he does not want to die.
ReplyDeleteCameo had the best title for chapter 8. It was "Reflection" and I thought it was a great title because he basically is formed into a new person. his logic has changed along with his view on his brothers.
ReplyDeleteDescribe a drawing someone from your group created that highlighted an important idea from the chapter: I think the best picture for chapter eight was Kate Ballard's picture. Kate's image is of Equality throwing the arrow rock at the bird. In her picture the bird is sitting on a branch and Equality is throwing the rock. First of all this is a great picture, by a great artist. This scene was very important because this shows that Equality can fend for himself; he does not need anyone to take care of him.
ReplyDeleteI think one important question from reading Anthem that was brought up was, what do you think happens after chapter 8 and 9? We all thought about it and decided that Equality and the Golden One will stay in the house and probably start a family. Lastly, this is really important because if you don't make predictions when reading a novel then its hard to understand what your reading.
ReplyDeleteAfter discussing our responses with our group I choose the question which passage best describes a change in character? Describe? The answer I choose for this question came from Cassie McCoumb. She said that the most important passage was when it said that Equality was laughing for the first time. This was the most important because when Equality was back in his village he never laughed and now he is for the first time.
ReplyDeleteSeveral members in our group chose the passage where Equality sees himself in the river, and catches his reflection for the first time. “For upon the blue of the sky below us, we saw our own face for the first time.” We thought this was important because in the society of Equality, it is forbidden to view your our face. Once Equality does see his face, he sees himself as an individual person.
ReplyDeleteKrysta chose a passage with a metaphor. The passage said, “...it was as if we were swimming through a pool of leaves...” This showed how the first day in the forest was successful, as if Equality 7-2521 had flowed through the forest.
ReplyDeleteIn the yellow discussion group for, then novel, Anthem we went over everything we wrote down in our summaries. We decided that for chapter nine the title, “The Golden Day” was the best to identify chapter nine. We all chose this title as the best because in chapter nine, Equality finds that the Golden One has followed him to the forest and then they spend their day together exploring the forest.
ReplyDeleteI think that Krysta had the best picture for chapter 8. She drew the picture herself and its of Equality throwing a rock at the bird that he cooked and ate. This shows him being independent.
ReplyDeleteFor chapter eight in the book Anthem by Ayn Rand we choose Kate's title as the best. It was, My First Day. She said she choose it because it was his first day alone thinking of himself as a one person. We thought that this title was the best because it is not just one part of the story, it deals with the whole idea of the story and finding out how to think for yourself.
ReplyDeleteBen had the best title, he had With Darkness Comes Light cause at the the end of the forest its dark and nobody lives when entered. Explaining what he finds and able to find good things in what he assumed to be inhospitable.
ReplyDeleteI feel that my quote about an Important change in Equality in Chapter 9 answered the question well. The quote I chose was, "We have broken the law, but we have never doubted it. Yet... now we are learning to doubt. When he thinks this, it shows that for his whole life, even if he didn't abide by the law, he never questioned it. Now Equality is realizing that maybe the law isn't right after all.
ReplyDeleteOur group discussed what would happen, past chapters eight and nine in Anthem. We agreed that Equality and The Golden One will not go back to their oppressive society. Equality and The Golden One will probably start their own society based on individualism. They are the happiest they have ever been, pride radiates from them, joy courses through them, thick as blood. For them freedom is a treasure prized above all.
ReplyDeleteJohn Nelson had a very vivid and appropriate picture for chapter nine. He drew the letter "I" on his paper symbolizing the changes in Equalities personality in the past few chapters. As the book has progressed, Equality has been referring more to his own thoughts than those of the collective group. This drawing could be the precursor to a permanent change in the way that Equality referrers to himself at the end of the novel. We may be seeing more independent thinking from him in the form of "I".

ReplyDeleteJustin named Chapter 9 "The Golden One" because the chapter is about how the golden one finds Equality and they begin to live in the uncharted forest. I think that Justin has good reasoning for naming chapter nine "The Golden One" because chapter nine didn't have much detail of any other subject.
